Town Deputy Budget Discussion at the Town Board Meeting on April 27, 2026, 7:00 PM

The Burgess and Commissioners are currently reviewing the proposed FY27 budget, including funding for the Community Deputy Program through the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office. The Town currently contracts two deputies at an annual cost of approximately $431,000.

Over the past six months, the Town has operated with one deputy due to a medical leave situation. During this period, a review of service data shows no significant change in calls for service or response levels. Based on this experience, the Town is considering reducing the contract to one deputy, resulting in an estimated annual savings of $220,000.

These savings would be reallocated to fund two additional Town staff positions: one in Public Works and one in the Finance Office. The Town has discussed this proposal with Sheriff Jenkins, who supports the adjustment and has confirmed that full law enforcement coverage will continue to be available, including 24-hour patrol coverage within the region.

Please feel free to express your opinions in person or via email to Burgess John Miller at John.Miller@ci.middletown.md.us or Town Administrator Robert Wilkes at Rwilkes@ci.middletown.md.us
